Should you Rent, Hire or Buy a Thermal Imaging Camera?

Is it a good option to rent, hire or buy a thermal imaging camera?

Do you know what specifications are needed for the application you intend to use if for?

There are companies that will rent an infrared camera to you, but are you really going to know what to do with it when you get it? When you see infrared photos like the ones on this website, you may think it’s a matter of simply pointing the camera at a target and seeing an image… not so. Thermography takes time to learn, and what you see on the image needs to be interpreted correctly otherwise it’s a complete waste of time.

Here’s my case in point: An electrician recently called us who had hired a thermal imaging camera. He told us that he couldn’t see the wiring in the electrical switchboard he was imaging at the time . We solved the issue over the phone for him… it turns out he wasn’t aware you need to remove the switchboard cover! This electrician thought the infrared camera would allow him to ‘see through’ the protective cover. The bottom line was he had absolutley no idea what was going on.

If you plan to buy a camera, you’ll want to make sure you have plenty of work for it! The price of these cameras can get up to $100k +, but there are cheaper options available. But still, no matter what type of infrared imager you buy, you still need to know what the theory side.

Is that missing insulation or a leak you’re looking at behind the wall? Infrared cameras can not tell you this information… but an experienced thermographer will know right away.

The bottom line is that it’s cheaper to get a thermal imaging inspector in to do the job who has the equipment and experience… and depending on the job, it may work out cheaper than the hassle of hiring, paying deposits and insurance etc.
